Latvia
For the uninitiated, Latvia, located in northeastern Europe, is one of the continent’s most beautiful countries. Riga, situated on the Daugava River, is a major seaport and a cultural and industrial center. The old town of Riga, a UNESCO World Heritage site, contains several medieval structures, including a 13th-century cathedral and guild halls from the 14th century. The city is the seat of the country's largest university and of the Latvian Academies of Art and Sciences, as well as several graduate programs in law and economics. It also has a multitude of cultural institutions, including an acclaimed opera, a symphony orchestra, several theaters, and museums.
Scotland (New Residency Location!)
The Scotland Writing Residency is located in Brora, a coastal village in the east of Sutherland in the Highland area of Scotland. The writer resides, for one week during July or August, in a furnished and recently renovated, traditional croft cottage, containing three-bedrooms. The cottage is few hundred years old (pre-Highland Clearances), enjoys uninterrupted views southwards over the Moray Firth and provides open access to the beaches, hills, burns, lochs and the beautiful unspoiled sandy beaches. It is a perfect base for hill and coastal walks, scenic drives and touring the Northern Highlands. Towels and linen included; off-street parking available; open fire. Washing machine, dryer, stove/cooker, microwave, and fridge. It is suggested that the writer bring a car with them on the residency.
The Scotland Writing Residency awards a free one-week stay in the Brora cottage based on a completed application. The residency does not come with a cash prize.

The Scotland Residency is awarded based on a completed application. Applications are chosen by a peer-review committee. To apply, candidates are required to submit all of the following as ONE PDF or Word document by May 15th 2012 and the winner will be notified in early June:
- Ten pages of poetry or up to 25 pages of fiction.
- A CV, including a publication list (with full contact information).

The Kentucky Writing Residency is located in a beautiful, rural area of Larue County, Kentucky (near Elizabethtown and Hodgenville). The writer resides, for two to four weeks, in a furnished, 100-year-old, two-bedroom farmhouse. There is great flexibility in when the writer decides to use the residency. It is suggested that the writer bring a car with them on the residency.
The Kentucky Writing Residency awards a free two to four-week stay in the farmhouse based on a completed application.
